On June 23, 2001, seven Young Explorers went to Michigan State University to compete in the 4-H YESS (Youth Environmental Science and Stewardship) Contest. There were three parts to the contest: compass navigation skills, indoor identification of wildlife, and outdoor trail identification of animals, plants, tracks, and environmental issues. Each question was worth several points, depending on how specific you answered. For example, a skeleton found in the woods would be worth one point if you answered: deer; 2 points if you answered: male deer (horns); three points if you answered: male Whitetail deer; and 4 points if you answered: male Whitetail deer killed (broken leg) and eaten by a predator.
