YESS CONTEST
On June 23, 2001, seven Young Explorers went to Michigan State University to compete in the 4-H YESS (Youth Environmental Science and Stewardship) Contest. There were three parts to the contest: compass navigation skills, indoor identification of wildlife, and outdoor trail identification of animals, plants, tracks, and environmental issues. Each question was worth several points, depending on how specific you answered. For example, a skeleton found in the woods would be worth one point if you answered: deer; 2 points if you answered: male deer (horns); three points if you answered: male Whitetail deer; and 4 points if you answered: male Whitetail deer killed (broken leg) and eaten by a predator.

Congratulations to the Team of Dylan Burke, Katy Massey, Tom Miller, and Danielle Zaczek who took first place in the Intermediate Age group.

OUTDOOR EXPO
After the YESS Contest, the Young Explorers stayed at MSU to attend the Outdoor Expo. What do you do at an Outdoor Expo? Shoot BB guns, shotguns, bows and arrows, and crossbows.

Watch dogs point, retrieve, and field birds. Go canoeing and kayaking. Throw prehistoric spears or Learn to build a fire with flint. Eat beef jerky. Fish.
