YOUNG EXPLORERS FOOD AWARDS


FOODS AND NUTRITIONS


All foods will be judged on the day noticed in the current Fair Book. Products will not be accepted for judging at any other time.

One entry only per class.

No commercial mixes will be allowed.

3"x5" recipe card must accompany all products in all classes except decorated cakes, candy making, and food preservation.

Cookies and cake squares should be of uniform size.

No cream pies or pies with a cream based will be accepted.

All entries in classes for cookies/cookie squares, cupcakes/cake squares, quick bread, muffins/biscuits, yeast rolls/bread, and nutritious snacks should be displayed on a paper plate and in a plastic bag.

Entries must be in the classes named. Specialty items are to be judged in "Any Other Food Preparation Exhibit".

The judge's decision will be final.

All foods' entries must be acceptable products. Judges may or may not taste food entries.



INDOOR MEALS

Four Cookies or Cookie Squares
(Limited to Exhibitors Ages 6 - 12)
Cookies approximately 2" in diameter; Cookie Squares cut approximately 2"x2".


Four Unfrosted Cupcakes or Cake Squares
Cake Squares cut approximately 2"x2".


One-half Loaf Quick Bread


Four Muffins or Biscuits


Four Yeast Rolls or ½ Loaf Yeast Bread


Nutritious Snacks


Fancy or Filled Yeast Breads
1 Loaf, Ring, of Square of Baked Goods


One Two-Crust Fruit Pie


Whole Cakes
(Layered Cakes, Sponge, Chiffon, Angel Food, Loaf, and Coffee Cakes)
Frosted or Unfrosted
Total product will be judged.


Any Other Food Preparation Exhibit
(Creative Recipes and Specialities)


One-Dish Meals (Casseroles)
Accompanied by Poster and Recipe Card
Must include a good source of complete protein plus at least two other food groups.


One Decorated Cake
With the recipe for the cake and icing included.
(To be judged as a decorated cake, it must be on an original baked cake)

OUTDOOR MEALS

Poster (14"x22"), Notebook, or Recipe Collection
Showing Types of Fires for Outdoor Cooking Techniques and Safety Precautions


Two Pieces of Homemade Equipment for Use in Outdoor Meals
Accompanied by a Poster (14"x22") or Notebook Giving Complete Directions on Use


Food Items Made Using Outdoor Cooking Techniques





FOOD PRESERVATION
Must be Processed According to Current Safety Guidelines.
All Classes, except Dried Foods, should be labeled with processing method and date processed.
Jars may be of varying shapes and sizes.


Three (3) Jars of Fruit


Three (3) Jars of Vegetables


Three (3) Jars of Jams, Jellies, Pickles or Relishes


One Package of Frozen Vegetables or Fruit and
14"x22" Poster Showing Process in Freezing Foods


Any Other Exhibit Related to Food Preservation (Equipment, Posters, Etc.)

Any Baked Product (Cakes, Cookies, Etc.)

FOLKPATTERN FOODS

Foodways Notebook (Family Traditions, Etc.)


Recipe Collection
Notebook or Card File (with box) with Recipes from Foreign Countries as well as
United States in Appropriate Categories such as Main Dishes, Desserts, Salads, Etc.
Recipes Must be Dated with the Year Collected.
At Least 25 New Recipes Must be Added Each Year.

EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS

A Poster (14"x22") on Nutrition or Any Other Food Related Topic
(Examples: Basic Four Food Groups, Balanced Meals, Nutritious Snacks, Party
