Long jacket (blazer) that compliments the color of the horse. The new thing is the long show shirt that is form fitting for showmanship and then tucked in for western equitation. Always keep in mind that your colors between your hat, shirt, and pants should always flow nicely. The idea is to match your horse so do not put hot pink on a sorrell horse that has a lot of red tints to it.

An ASTM approved helmet is a must at all 4-H shows. Common colors for hunt seat jackets are black, navy, or pinstripe. The key to remember for English pants, which are called breeches, is to never wear white, white is for dressage. Most commonly worn are black jackets (pinstripe or not) with tan or rust colored breeches. Shirts under the jacket can be either short sleeve or long with a high color and a ratcatcher (name for the removable color) and a pin for the color. For the guys, the same applies for colors, but the shirt is a common button-down shirt with a tie. Saddle pad is white. |
You will need a derby hat. Your boots (which go under your pants) are similar to the paddock boots and can be purchased at Walmart.
Shirts are normal button-down shirt (mens) with a tie (mens) and do not forget your flower for your pocket or a handkerchief folded correctly.
No saddle pad is used for saddle seat riding. |
For guys, a nice pair of jeans that fit correctly when riding (bottom of pants should still be at the heel line when seated on the saddle) and a nice button-up long sleeve shirt with a scarf neck tie tied. Guys shirts can be any color, but the tie should accent the shirt. Hats can either be straw or felt, but typically they are straw, black or tan. For the girls, retro is back - button-up shirts with a side scarf. Still in style for girls is the form fitting lycra shirts are in with leather and crystal accents. Remember to watch your patterns and colors with your horse; too much attention can hurt you in the end. |
