One's first pet is often the most remembered and certainly the most cherished. This can definitely be said of Mamma Kitty and her special relationship with Katy. Mamma Kitty was found under our porch with three of her kittens, all of them grey like her, including Jasmine. Thus, at age six and having a very limited name capacity, Katy named her "Mamma Kitty".
Katy and Mamma Kitty bonded and were inseparable. Katy even used Mamma Kitty as her pillow, causing us a great scare when we found baby fleas in Katy's hair. Mamma Kitty got flea medicine and Katy got flea shampoo for a short time. The bond between the two was so intense that Nic (Katy's younger brother) envied them greatly, zipping the cat into a duffle bag in his room one day in hopes that Mamma Kitty would learn to love him, too. Within days, he had his own kitten to love and cherish.
Katy's first Fair show cat was Mamma Kitty, beginning in the Pee Wee Showmanship class and female household division. Over the years, Mamma Kitty inspired Katy to continue learning and showing, resulting in Katy's increased showmanship wins.
In 2000, two days before Fair, Mamma Kitty disappeared. She'd left before for several days at a time but Katy panicked because fair came and went without Mamma Kitty. The family gave up all hope, thinking that an older cat like Mamma Kitty just might not make it back into our lives. Then, one day, miraculously, she appeared in the driveway - 41 days after she left. She was rushed to the vet and nursed back to health, although was never completely the same after that absence.
When the family moved to the new house, Mamma Kitty came along. But, the move was distressing for her and she never adapted to the new house, leaving one stormy night never to return. She will be remembered always by a little girl who loved her very much.
