PRETTY LAKE ADVENTURE CAMP

In July, 2003, 21 4-H members and six chaperones attended the Pretty Lake Adventure Camp, courtesty of J & S Tree Service. Pretty Lake Adventure Camp is located in Kalamazoo County, a camp designed to promote team-building and comraderie among participants.

There were two camps - boys (5) and girls (16). It is agreed that the boys' awning was much better than the girls, but the girls definitely cooked better than the boys. Although the boys did make a pretty mean Kool-Aid for dinner.

The groups were responsible themselves for everything during the camp weekend, including pitching tents, carrying water and food, cooking, building fire, and clean-up. Chaperones were not allowed to assist and/or give advice, but were present only for safety reasons (this was really hard for parents, whew!). The group was separated in two and set-out to perform team-building tasks.

One group had to line up by eye color (lightest to darkest). They could not step off the log that they stood on. If they did, they had to start over. This got quite difficult when you were trying to move people up and down a log; over and under and through each other.

Another group had to pass each member through the holes of this rope strewn spiderweb. They had to pass through every hole in the web, including the holes over their heads. This meant you had to work as a team to pass people through the upper holes. Just a little tricky.

In 2004, over 20 Young Explorers (boys and girls) returned to Pretty Lake Adventure Camp for another fun weekend full of raccoons. This adventure included going into the trees in the ropes courses, as well as other team building activities.

A great thank you goes to J&S Tree Service who made this wonderful outing possible.
